About Ingredients
Ingredients are the building blocks of products, recipes and daily food logs. Whether you're adding pineapple, broccoli, or San Marzano tomatoes, Kanvie helps you understand exactly what you're eating, down to the nutrients, variations, and even your personal history with that ingredient.
What Is an Ingredient?
An ingredient in Kanvie represents a base food item (e.g., “Pineapple”) with different forms like:
- Fresh Pineapple
- Dried Pineapple
- Canned Pineapple in Juice
Each form may have different nutritional values, which is why selecting the right one matters. We call these forms variants (you can also think of them as “types” or “versions”).
Customizing an Ingredient
When you view an ingredient, you can customize two things:
1. Amount + Unit
You can choose how much of the ingredient you're using, such as:
- Grams
- Milliliters
- Cups / Tablespoons (if supported by that ingredient)
Kanvie will calculate all nutritional values based on the exact variant and amount you select.
2. Variant (Form of the Ingredient, If Available)
Examples include:
- Fresh
- Frozen
- Dried
- Canned
- Cooked / Raw
- Peeled / Unpeeled
Different variants have different densities, water content, vitamins, and calorie values.
