Calculating Your Calorie Budget

article-header-img

Your Daily Calorie Budget in Kanvie is the number of calories you can consume each day while staying on track with your goals. It's personalized based on your body, activity, and objectives.

Think of it as a smart guideline: enough fuel for your body's needs, plus energy burned from activity, minus any adjustments for weight goals.

1. Baseline Energy: BMR

Kanvie starts with your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), calculated using one of three formulas:

  • Mifflin-St Jeor formula (Default formula if not adjusted manually)
  • Katch-McArdle formula
  • Cunningham formula

This represents the calories your body burns just to stay alive at rest.

Learn more about the way Kanvie uses these formulas.

2. Activity Calories: METs and Tracked Movements

Calories burned from exercises, workouts, and everyday movements are added. Each activity has a MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) value, which adjusts energy expenditure based on intensity, duration, and your weight.

3. Goal Adjustments: Weight Loss, Maintenance, Gain

  • Maintain Weight: Keeps your calorie budget equal to BMR + activity calories.
  • Lose Weight: Allows you to subtract calories using a slider to create a controlled deficit.
  • Gain Weight: Lets you add calories using a slider for a surplus.

4. Full Example

  • Person: 70 kg, basal metabolic rate (BMR) = 1600 kcal
  • First Activity: 30-minute run at 10 METs → 350 kcal
  • Second Activity: 1-hour walk at 3 METs → 210 kcal
  • Goal: Lose weight, slider set to -300 kcal

Total Calories Before Goal Adjustments

Final Daily Calorie Budget after goal adjustments

Based on this example, the Kanvie app would recommend approximately 1860 kcal per day for this person.
