About Products
Products are packaged, branded food items found in stores. Anything from protein bars to pasta sauces, ready meals, yogurts, cereals, or even frozen dinners.
Whether you scan a barcode or look one up manually, Kanvie helps you understand exactly what's inside the product and how it fits into your diet.
What Is a Product?
A product is a specific branded food item with its own:
- Packaging
- Nutrition label
- Serving sizes
- Ingredients list
- Barcode (in most cases)
Examples:
- “Coca Cola Diet Coke”
- “Heinz Tomato Ketchup”
- “Oatly Oat Milk”
Unlike ingredients (which are generic foods), products come with fixed, manufacturer-defined nutrition data.
Customizing a Product
When you view a product, you can customize two things:
1. Amount + Unit
You can choose how much of the product you're using, such as:
- Grams
- Milliliters
- Cups / Tablespoons (if supported by that product)
Kanvie will calculate all nutritional values based on the exact variant and amount you select.
2. The Variant (If Available)
Some products come with multiple different nutritional values.
Examples include:
- A packaged rice or pasta product that lists nutrients for both its “raw” and “cooked” state
- Instant ramen that list nutrients for both the dry product and the cooked product after adding water
- A packaged coffee drink with an additional separate sachet of sugar, that has one ingredient label with the added sugar and one without the added sugar
Make sure to select the correct variant when creating recipes and diary entries.
